Wedding Day Tip: Take It All In!

15 May

I recently attended a friends wedding and heard a piece of advice that really stuck with me.  At the end of his toast, the brother of the brides asked the bride and groom to stand up and look around the room at all the people that had gathered together to support and celebrate their union in marriage.  The newly weds did so and after several moments you could tell they were truly overwhelmed by the love and support that stared back at them. Afterwards the bride told me it was one of her favourite moments of the night; one she would never forget.

Another great way to capture this amazing memory forever is to gather everyone together for one huge group portrait. It’s a great way to capture everyone together! For best results, ask your wedding photographer if they have a panoramic setting on their camera

(formerly known as The Quality Parkway)

To get local couples wedding planning started on a truly altruistic track, the Niagara Autumn Wedding Show 2011 is running the 3rd Annual Wedding Show food drive (Brides for Banks) in support of Community Care, St. Catharines/Thorold. We hope to raise over 500 canned goods for the families and children in the Niagara Region.

So we ask everyone attending this year’s show, to raid their pantries or head over to their local grocer and bring as many non-perishable food donations as they can to the wedding show at The Holiday Inn & Suites Parkway Conference Centre on Sunday October 2nd, 2011.  12noon-5pm each day.  Even if they can’t stay for the show, we still welcome any donations at the door!

WHY? We encourage brides and grooms to incorporate the causes and charities that they are passionate about or would like to become passionate about in their wedding planning because it is a simple way to make their wedding a rewarding, positive experience that truly represents who they are as a couple.  It also allows their wedding to leave a memorable impact on their community and world…not just pretty pic in their photo album!

MAK Studios Wedding Trends in 2011

We absolutely love our job! Whats not to like? rWe have the best clients and are honoured to have the the pleasure of capturing and preserving a bride and grooms most romantic event of their lives. We are a mother and daughter photography team and we shoot fabulous weddings for fantastic people. Check out some of the trends we have noticed for the 2011 season…

Vintage glamour-If you have been anywhere near media in the last few months, the wedding of the year definitely belongs to Will and Kate. From Kate’s beautiful Chantilly lace bodice to the sprig of myrtle directly passed down from Queen Victorias very own bouquet. Vintage glamour and Hollywood drama is IN! As the fashion world trends this way, so does the bridal world. From the detail shots to the posing, our business has definitely been mirroring the runway and creating beautifully styled Fashion inspired weddings.

First look – Wedding photography has definitely moved away from the traditional to a more relaxed romantic photojournalism with a touch of fashion. Brides are no longer looking for the way things were done in the past and are deciding to blaze their own trail. Remember when superstition dictated that it was bad luck for the groom to see the bride on their wedding day until the ceremony? Not the case any more. For some couples they are opting for the more contemporary “First Look”. This is a great opportunity for the photographer. The first look takes place just before the ceremony in a private location. The purpose is to allow the couple a time where they can drink in the magic and romanticism of how they arrived at this beautiful moment and to dispel nerves often heightened by not seeing each other. This way, they can share the time alone as possibly the only private time they will share in that day.

Eco/green weddings – Maybe its due to the recession or possibly our heightened awareness of the world we live in, but brides are definitely trending towards reduce-reuse-recycle. Green weddings are in! Right down to reusing wedding gowns and renting flowers. As photographers we are seeing the incorporation of family owned heirlooms and the desire to create new heirlooms for generations to come!

Same day slideshow – Well, maybe not such a new trend but it is definitely something that our couples still ask for. We are living in a time of social media with instant result. The same day slide show gives the bride and groom the opportunity to see their guests’ reactions to their memories from the day. It is always a crowd pleaser and our way as photographers for getting great feedback for upcoming trends.

Remember that ultimately it is your special day, and it does not belong to anyone else. Follow your heart and you will have no regrets. We could go on and on with our ever changing industry. If you would like to discuss any more trends, please feel free to contact us at info@makstudioimages.com

Your Overall Favourite Wedding Trend of 2011-2012:I love DIY wedding projects.  Especially the fabric and paper flowers you see popping up on wedding blogs.  They look amazing hanging for a ceremony backdrop or even pinned into the crooks of Manzanita branches for centerpieces.  I just really enjoy the organic feel DIY items have, it let’s your guests know you spent a lot of time on small details, and gives you huge bragging rights.

I recently did a photoshoot with my sister of Kings+Queens Photography and we added a lot of DIY elements to the shoot.  We focused on a retro literature theme.  So we wrapped vases with old book covers, stacked centerpieces on colourful paperbacks and created book mobiles.  One of my favorites was the paper cone table runner we created from an old architecture magazine.

Your Favourite Wedding Flower Trend of 2011-2012:  Echiveria!  I am a huge plant fanatic so when I started to see succulents showing up in bouquets I was super excited.  The silver blue grey or even purple muted hues of echiveria lend really well to vintage or rustic style bouquets.  They also add a twist to very popular all green bouquets.

Echiveria!

Echiveria! Melanie's favourite flower

This was a wedding we did just this past Saturday with Echiveria in the bride’s bouquet.

8)     Should a bride take her dress size and overall body size and type into consideration when choosing a type of bouquet?  If so, what type of things should she look for?

I think this should be taken into the smallest of consideration.  I think a bigger factor is what the bride wants.  If a tiny bride wants a gigantic bouquet, that is what she should get.

9)     A Flower type or colour combination you wish brides would try more often:

I wish I could work with yellow a bit more often, in combination with any colour!  My favorite yellow flower is probably brain celosia with a close second of kangaroo paw.  They are both in this bouquet of ours that was featured on the cover of Toronto life!

What type of flower would you recommend to brides on a budget?

I feel like I need to shout this from the rooftops…CARNATIONS!  Everything old is new again recently and carnations are having a huge comeback.  I don’t mean a dozen cotton candy pink carnations with baby’s breath here, it’s all in the way you use them!  My favorite is a dark eggplant purple carnation called moonvista.  Tucked lower in to bouquets in mass they take on a completely different look. Plus it is one of the few truly dark purple flowers that are available year round.

In this bouquet moonvista carnations were used along with purple lisianthus to get the desired punch of eggplant.

carnations: perfect for a bride on a budget

What is your favourite style/flower for a groom’s Boutonnieres / Buttonhole?

I am a big fan of berzillia berries, clematis seed heads or anything that isn’t too fussy (or extra fragile).  My favorite boutonniere to date was just a few dahlia buds and kangaroo paw with a “hand tied” look to it.  I think a wrap of ribbon also helps to finish the boutonniere off.  For an avid fisherman we did fishing lure boutonnieres, that was also a lot of fun.

One Wedding Flower Trend you wish would completely stop:

Can’t really think of any trend that I want to stop.  Trends get people excited about their weddings, and heat up discussions on blogs.  I am excited to see what the next wedding trend will be and as a florist you would love to be the one to start it!

Niagara Autumn Wedding Show-The Ultimate Wedding Planning Event!

29 Sep

Hello ladies & gents!

For those of you planning on attending the 7th Annual Niagara Autumn Wedding Show, this Sunday at The Quality Parkway St. Catharines, be sure to check out Brides Magazine, which hits newsstands across the Niagara Region today!

Brides is a FREE magazine inserted into all of the St. Catharines Standard, Niagara Falls Review, and Welland Tribune Newspapers.  It not only features some great wedding planning articles, tips and tricks; but it also has a list of the exhibitors that will be present at the 7th Annual Niagara Autumn Wedding Show this Sunday.

We have be told by past brides & grooms that this magazine is a great tool for planning wedding, because it is a directory of the wedding professionals who will be at the show.  This allows you to map out your route and really focus on finding and booking the products and services you are most excited about or most in need of for your wedding.  In addition, it saves you time! Because you already have the contact information (company name, phone number and website) for everyone you will be talking to! So when you are chatting with exhibitors, you can spend the time discussing the important issues such as unique details you want, pricing etc….not trying to scribble down their number so you can chat later.

Here is an electronic version to review, but you will also get a free copy at the Niagara Autumn Wedding Show

A Food Drive in Support of Community Care for St. Catharines & Thorold

at the 7th Niagara Autumn Wedding Show 2010

Sunday October 3rd, 2010 – The Quality Parkway Hotel & Convention Centre, St. Catharines

To get local couples wedding planning starting their marriage on a truly altruistic track, the Niagara Autumn Wedding Show 2010 is running the 2nd Annual Wedding show food drive (Brides for Banks) in support of Community Care for St. Catharines/Thorold. We hope to raise over 1,000 canned goods for the families and children in the Niagara region.

In addition, Fall kicks off the holiday seasons, where many of us have the privilege of sitting down with family and friends to a succession of amazing holiday feasts.  Not all families are as a lucky.  In fact, food banks are at an all time low supply of food across the Golden Horseshoe.  We want to lend a helping hand to ensure that as many people as possible have the opportunity to not only enjoy in the holiday season, but to have food on their plates each and everyday.
