Behind the Wedding Day: Cakes with Attitude

19 Nov

Greeting brides and grooms-to-be

We all know that one of the most exciting and yummiest day of the wedding planning process is your cake testing day! Not only do you have to decide on your favourite combo or cake and icing but in this day in age, you have to decide if you want cake pops, cupcakes or an beautifully designed wedding cake…ahhh such decisions;) And speaking of design; this season is filled with wedding cakes that simply look like works of art!

One tip to keep in mind when booking your wedding cake company is to choose a cake vendor that is close in proximity to your wedding reception venue. That way you can avoid any accidents en route, ensure the cake doesn’t spend a ton of time in the heat and to avoid extra travel costs. One local wedding cake pro is Eva from Cakes with Attitude.

Cakes With Attitude started out of a desire by its owner, Eva Frickleton, to make something special for her daughter Aneshka’s birthday while they were still living in Scotland. Eva, who’s from the Czech Republic, has switched careers from architecture and, instead of designing houses, is now designing cakes. Under the tutelage of Paul Bradford, royalty and celebrity cake designer, a special talent was discovered, developed and has now been transported across the Atlantic to Ontario.

At Cakes With Attitude we specialize in edible works of art. If you are in search of the perfect wedding cake, favours, novelty cake, birthday cake, cupcakes or any other special occasion cake, Cakes With Attitude will transform your idea into a cake that is incredible to look at with an amazing taste. We are always open to new ideas and inspiration. If you have something in mind please get in touch and we will do all we can to create your perfect cake or cupcakes. Everything is tailored to your occasion, whether simple and elegant or wild and whimsical, and made to order just for you.

A Bride’s Vision

I saw these awesome ideas on the net, and at my friend’s wedding, they had this ceiling draping with lights.  The head table and cake table were all lit up with beautiful floating fabric. Then they had added their signature colour it was like a grape purple to the décor and these gorgeous diamond brooches.  The Backdrop was all lit up and had coloured fabric and crystals to match, it was so pretty.  They had chair covers and the bows were the same colour as the napkins.  She had so many beautiful details that’s  what I want only in royal blue.

I love doing that sort of thing, it’s so much fun.  I am really crafty.  I’ll just buy all the things, (I know some great dollar stores) then, I’ll just get the wedding party, family and friends, go into the hall the day before and show them how I want it and let them go to it.  I’ll get the wedding party and our parents to take it all down after the wedding, they won’t mind.

A Bride’s Reality;

How come I can’t find the things I need?  Wow! I never thought it would cost this much.  I didn’t realize I needed so much material and things to do all this.  Oh! I have to remember to buy extension cords, I hope the wedding party understands the way I want it decorated! Some of them are not very creative.  I’m sure they can get the day off from work that Friday.  I wonder how I attached that ceiling thing? Maybe someone will go up the ladder, it’s pretty high.   I hope everyone is not too tired or drunk to take it all down after the wedding.  I wonder what I’ll do with all of it after the wedding?

WHAT!!!!!  We can’t get into the hall on Friday, they have another function  What am I going to do?  We will all be getting our hair done and the photographer is coming at 11:00 am – OMG – what did I get myself into – what was I thinking, this is too much stress!!!!!!!

Solution -= Hire a professional Designer/Decorator

A good decorator will respond to your call quickly and set up a meeting at their place of business or possibly your venue if the decorator has never worked there before.

The Decorator will consult with you to determine your vision for your perfect day.  She or he will offer options to customize your decorating to match your personal style and taste as well as helpful tips on getting the best bang for your bucks.

You should expect to see a portfolio of the decorating done for other clients and a list of references that you can contact.  A good designer will do a site inspection to determine what will work and not work and take necessary measurements.  Be sure to give the designer a contact name from your venue so they can obtain answers to questions such as time to decorate, tear down times, and review any other details, like safety restrictions such as open flame.

Be sure to get a proper contract itemizing each item and the price, outlining the payment schedule and cancellation policy.  Remember!!!! This contract protects YOU.

A great decorator returns phone calls and e-mails promptly during the planning process for your questions or concerns and is respectful  of your time, arrives on time prepared with all items, equipment, and experienced and friendly staff required for completing the set-up.  The decorator uses their time efficiently and if time restraints are a factor, will bring additional staff to assist the designer in completing your vision.  The designer should have your décor completed long before the guests arrive.  A thoughtful  decorator takes pictures of the décor before any guests arrive to share later with you.

No preparation, removal work should be seen by the Bride and Groom (unless they choose to) or their guests.  The decorator should provide their cell # just in case during set-up and wedding day times.

The only thing a Bride and Groom are responsible for is to walk into a beautifully dressed reception hall and gasp with delight when they see their vision become a reality.

Finally, when your beautiful celebration of love comes to an end, you, your groom, the wedding party, family  and guests can leave with just the memory of a wonderful day.  The decorating team will arrive to remove it all, along with the memory of being a part of your special day.

TopWeddingShows.com Interview with Nozie Weddings and Events

2 Dec

Company Name
Nozie Weddings & Events
“Your Event….Our Passion…” (www.nozieweddings.com)
Q:  Favourite Aspect of Decorating?
A: I love working with non-traditional centerpieces like feathers, unique items like pieces from your home, ie. clay pots, that can always help guest with a conversation piece.
Q:  Biggest wedding trend/theme of 2012 when it comes to decor?
A: Vintage glamour, woodland rustic, winter wonderland, garden and beach themes

Q: There are so many DIY brides today. What is your favourite project for a DIY bride and what areas of wedding planning would you caution brides about when “going it alone”?
A: Making your own wedding day Jewelery, they are many sites and magazines of beautiful DIY jewelery with instructions. e.g.(http://www.stylemepretty.com/2009/06/11/diy-project3-pearl-necklace/) and my advice to brides is to be careful when it comes to spending money on their wedding. I think they should try not to spend money where they don’t really need to but to splurge on items that make an impact or more important to them. like if you want your centerpieces to stand out, spend more money on them and less on your table linen because the focal point will be centerpieces and probably few people will notice the linen.
Q:  Your favourite decor trend of 2012?
A: My favourite trend is mixing of table shapes and sizes. (rounds and rectangles). These trends give the reception tables a more interesting look and a less “coordinated” feel.

Q:  One of your favourite places (venues, outside etc) to conduct a wedding ceremony?
A: I love outdoor ceremony venues overlooking lakes like in Liuna Gardens and Rustic old look venues with a view like in Old Ancaster Mills and Cambridge Mills. Those are on my most favourites.

Q: Top 3 favourite colour palettes of 2012?
A: latte, Purple (eggplant, lilac), and black & white

Special Promotion: Nozie Weddings & Events is renting their Ostrich feather centerpieces for $35  for January to May weddings if you book your wedding before February 28, 2012 and/or  book a complete package of decor we will give you a choice of either 15 chaircovers of choice free or Crystal curtain backdrop.

TopWeddingShows.com Wedding Professional Spotlight: Carol Rame Weddings

Name of Company: Carol Rame Weddings (Wedding Planning, Design and Decor) www.carolrame.ca

Company Motto: LOVE Your Wedding..

Favourite Aspect/Moment of Planning a Wedding: After months of hard work and planning with my clients, I absolutely love seeing the final product of everything that we had planned and designed all come together. It`s so nice to see my clients relaxed, and enjoying their day without any worries. I also always get a little teary-eyed when I see them exchanging their vows, I am so happy for them!

Biggest Wedding Trend of 2011 when it comes to wedding planning: I absolutely love that couples are opting for more intimate affairs and going all out for their guests! I also like that more couples are showing off their individual style whether it`s vintage, rustic, glitzy or city chic. I also like to see the old mixed in with the new, and adding in unique twists to challenge the old traditions. I also notice more couples are budgeting more for decor and lighting-which is really nice to see since it makes a huge impact.

I love that more couples have become eco-conscious when it comes to their day which is great!

There are so many DIY brides today, what is favourite project for a DIY bride and what areas of wedding planning would you caution brides about when “going it alone”: I have a profound appreciation for anything handmade, so I truly appreciate the DIY Bride and her ambition to put all of that effort into her wedding day! One of my favourite DIY projects is having fun with seating charts-you can really get creative on names or themes for your tables, and the way you display the seating cards for your guests-simple, little things that can make a fun impact on your guests!

DIY is great-to a point. If you find yourself taking on too much, you are stressing over the project, or losing patience I would definitely consider hiring a pro to do the job instead. Sometimes DIY can cost you more in the long run with time, stress, and buying all the tools and materials you need for the job-DIY doesn`t always equal cheaper.

Your favourite trend of 2011: I think the Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton will shake things up a bit in terms of trends, but lately I am loving those one shoulder dresses!

One of your favourite places (venues, outside etc) to conduct a wedding ceremony: I love outdoor weddings, or any venues that have lots of windows to showcase nature’s beauty! I did a Wedding at the Ancaster Old Mill that was a gorgeous outdoor ceremony, and one of my favourite indoor places to decorate is The Flamborough Hills Golf Club, both places also have great staff, and were very accommodating for my couples.

Favourite colour palette of 2011: I really love mixing tones-especially metallic shades with colour!  Copper mixed with navy blue, Champagne and Ivory with gold accents. I also love the new Pantone colour of the year for 2011: Honeysuckle pink!

How does a bride know when they need a wedding coordinator: Sometimes wedding planning can start to bring on different types of stresses and worries on a newly engaged couple-more than what they bargained for.

Detail of a Wedding Reception by Carol Rame

Detail of a Wedding Reception by Carol Rame

There are quite a few indicators that you may need a wedding coordinator-I’ve outlined a few for you;

– If you have no idea where to begin

– Get stressed at the thought of planning your wedding,

-You are not staying within budget

-Your vision isn’t coming together

-You and your partner are not getting along over the wedding planning process

-Other people’s opinions are hindering your own plans

– If you don’t have a good support system, or are having trouble getting the help you need

– You are not sure how to go about hiring your vendors, or the right questions to ask

Those are all pretty good indicators that you need to hire one. Wedding planning should be fun, but it can bring a lot of pressure to a newly engaged couple. A good coordinator can step in and get things on the right track-and not only save you the stress, and worry but could also save you from making costly mistakes.
